Re-bedding and re-pointing is what separates a real restorer from a paint sprayer

Re-bedding and re-pointing is the unglamorous structural work that actually keeps water out of your house. It's also where most cheap restoration companies cut corners — because customers can't see it from the ground. Founded by a roof tiler with over twenty years' experience, Elite Roofing approaches re-bedding the way it should be done: properly, with the right mortar and the right pointing compound, by people who understand what's underneath.

What Is Re-bedding?

Re-bedding refers to replacing the cement mortar bed that sits under your roof's ridge caps and apex tiles. Over 20–30 years, this mortar cracks, crumbles, and loses its grip — leaving ridge caps loose and water vulnerable to enter. Re-bedding involves removing the old mortar, cleaning the surfaces, and laying a fresh, properly mixed mortar bed underneath each cap.

What Is Re-pointing?

Re-pointing is the application of a flexible pointing compound over the top and sides of the bedding mortar. Modern flexible pointing moves with the natural expansion and contraction of the roof — unlike rigid cement, which cracks. This is critical: rigid pointing always fails. Always. We only use proper flexible pointing compound.

Why It Matters

Failed bedding and pointing is one of the most common causes of roof leaks. Water gets under loose ridge caps, runs into the roof cavity, and ends up showing as ceiling stains months later. By the time you see the stain, real damage is already done. Re-bedding and re-pointing every 20–25 years is just part of maintaining a tile roof.

How We Do It

We remove every ridge cap, scrape out the old mortar bed completely, and check each cap for cracks (replacing any that are damaged). Then we lay a properly mixed cement mortar bed, reset each cap to the correct level, and finish with a colour-matched flexible pointing compound. The result lasts 25+ years and looks crisp from the ground.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my roof needs re-bedding? +

Look up at the ridge caps from the ground. If you can see crumbling mortar, gaps, or caps that look loose or uneven, it probably needs re-bedding. If your roof is over 20 years old and has never been re-bedded, it's almost certainly due.

Is flexible pointing really better than cement? +

Yes — and it's the industry standard now. Rigid cement pointing cracks within a few years because it can't move with the roof. Flexible pointing flexes with thermal movement and lasts 25+ years.

Can re-bedding be done without painting? +

Yes — we can re-bed and re-point a roof as a standalone job if that's all it needs. We colour-match the pointing to your existing roof so it blends naturally.

How long does the job take? +

A typical home takes 2–4 days for full re-bedding and re-pointing, depending on the roof size and pitch.
